Latex Mattresses - Common Questions

1. What is Latex?

Latex is a naturally therapeutic product derived from the sap found in rubber trees. Its rubber properties enable latex to bend and contour around any shape that is applying pressure to it. It bounces back to its original position a soon as the pressure is removed.

2. Why is a latex mattress better than a spring mattress?

A latex mattress:
  • 100% natural product
  • Ensures correct spinal support
  • Ensures correct spinal alignment
  • Removes pressure from shoulders and hips
  • Lasts longer than a spring mattress
  • Minimises partner disturbance
  • Prevents tossing and turning
  • Is hypoallergenic

3. What is 'zoning' in a latex mattress?

Zoning is when a mattress is staged in different densities to cater for different areas of your body. For example a mattress needs to be softer over your shoulder area and firmer over your lower back where you need more support. A three zone mattress will have three different densities in the one mattress.

4. Do I turn over and rotate a latex mattress?

A latex mattress does need to be turned over and rotated. We recommend that latex mattresses are turned once per month, and then rotated the next month, and then turned over again and so on. This is to ensure the latex wears evenly on all sides of the mattress.

5. Are latex mattresses hotter than spring mattresses?

Latex is a closed cell material, and therefore it needs to be perforated (have pin core holes through the mattress) to allow it to breath. Provided the mattress is perforated and the mattress is on a slatted base the mattress will not be hotter than a spring mattress.

6. Is latex good for allergy sufferers?

Latex is hypoallergenic meaning it is great for allergy sufferers or for people who suffer from hay fever, asthma and respiratory problems. Dust mites cannot live in a latex mattress and as a result latex mattresses promote good health.

7. Can I use my electric blanket on a latex mattress?

Yes, electric blankets do not harm latex mattresses. It is best to choose one with thin wires or to purchase an electric quilt by Sunbeam.

8. Do latex mattresses have to go on slat bases?

We suggest all of our mattresses either go on a slat base or a base with holes in it to allow air to flow naturally through the base and the mattress. You achieve approximately 30% of your comfort from your bed base, so it is an important factor to consider.

9. What is the life span of a latex mattress?

Most of our latex mattresses come with a 10 year warranty - however, they will last 15 to 20 years depending on your weight and how well you look after them.

10. What is the benefit to the special mattress covers?

  • You can dry clean them to promote good health
  • They keep perspiration off the mattress and you
  • They increase the life span of the mattress
  • Replacement covers can be ordered to freshen up the look and feel of your mattress
